Give Case Numbers a Unique Prefix

This article is meant for Licensed FogBugz. Sorry, but if you are using FogBugz On Demand, unique Case ID number prefixes are currently unavailable.

Now that there are many FogBugz installations out there, many people run into the situation where their clients or vendors also happen to be using FogBugz.  If they forward you a case concerning "Case 123" in their system, FogBugz will think it is about "Case 123" in your system and attach it to that case number.  Here's how to give your case numbers a unique prefix and avoid confusion.

At Fog Creek Software, our case numbers begin with FC.  You could use any word you like that you think will be unique.

1. Pick a prefix that you like and you think will be unique.
2.  Set the sCasePrefix variable depending on your platform
Windows: Create a registry string value HKLM\Software\Fog Creek Software\FogBugz\[path to your install]\sCasePrefix
Unix: Create a value in the application.data file (fogbugz/Accessories folder) called sCasePrefix
3. Set its value to the prefix you want (ours is FC)

There will be a transition period.  If people reply to old cases that don't have the prefix, they will come in as new cases to your system until people start replying to the emails you are sending out with your case prefix in them.

The case number prefixes only apply to the way the case numbers appear in the subject lines of emails to and from FogBugz.  Within FogBugz, the case number prefix is not listed.  For example, if I send email from FogBugz, the correspondence might be listed as Case 123 when I look at the case in my FogBugz.  However, in the subject line of the email, it would be listed as Case FC123.
