Translation

Tuesday, February 28, 2006 by Michael H. Pryor

It comes up every once in awhile that someone wants the interface for FogBugz in another language.  All of our strings (well, except for some database defaults) are in one file: lang.asp.

Changing the FogBugz interface just requires rewriting that file in whatever language you want, but this isn't necessarily a super simple task.  There are many lines in that file.

I put some thought into this topic awhile ago, trying to figure out a way to allow everyone to contribute to the translations.  I came up with a complicated web app that allowed for revisions and locking, and getting different versions of the file for different versions of FogBugz, etc.  But it was all too complicated.

If anyone has any thoughts or feedback on this, please let me know.  I realize this is something many people would be interested in, but I'm more interested in the logistics of how we might arrange something like this so it could happen.
