Magic Names

CityDesk is fairly liberal about allowing you to move things around freely in your site, without breaking links. For example you can move a picture file anywhere you want, and any articles that display that picture will still show it. If you have created a hyperlink to an article, you can move that article, and the hyperlink will still work.

This bit of magic is accomplished using magic names. A magic name always starts with the letters PTMFOG and then some numbers. When you insert a picture or hyperlink, rather than inserting the actual link, CityDesk will insert a magic name. Then when your site is published, CityDesk replaces the magic PTMFOG name with the actual path to the file or picture, wherever it happens to live now.

Most people can ignore all this magic, but if you ever look at the HTML of one of your pages you'll start to see all these PTMFOG things all over the place. That's what they are.

If you would like to know what the magic name is for an article or picture in your site, you can use the Copy Magic Name command to copy it to the clipboard so that you can insert it into your HTML directly.

To copy a magic name:

*   In the main window, right click on an item and choose Copy Magic Name from the menu.

This will copy the magic name to the Windows clipboard. If you have clicked on a file, it will also extract the file to the temporary directory where your external editor is working. For example, if you copy the magic name of a picture, you will be able to insert the magic name right away in an external HTML editor and the picture will show up correctly.

*  In your external editor, issue the Paste command to get the magic name.
