CityDesk 2.0-Documentation
Working With External EditorsAlthough CityDesk includes a basic built-in word processor, suitable for editing articles or simple HTML pages, when you are designing your site, you may want to use more advanced editors:
- Sophisticated HTML editors like Macromedia Dreamweaver, Microsoft FrontPage, etc.
- High-end graphics editors like Adobe Photoshop for pictures
- Any other file editor that you are comfortable with
You can edit any kind of file using external editors except articles. (Articles have extra properties like the headline and the filed date, and therefore must always be edited with the built-in editor).
To use an external editor to edit a file or template:
Right click on the file or template and choose Open With. You will see a list of programs that are registered with Windows as viewers for that file type.
When you edit an HTML file containing non-English text using an external HTML editor, make sure that editor understands that the file is in UTF-8 format. See Unicode and Character Set Issues.
If the editor you want is not registered with Windows, you can still add it to the list of editors that CityDesk knows about.
To register another editor with CityDesk:
Right click on a file.
Choose Open With » Choose Program
From this dialog, you can add, modify, or delete the list of programs that you want to be available for editing files.
When you are using an external HTML editor, you may want to insert a picture from your CityDesk site, or insert a link to a CityDesk article. CityDesk stores these links internally using "magic names" starting with the word PTMFOG. The magic names are replaced with the real names when you publish. When you are using an external editor, you will want to use the magic names to refer to these elements. See Magic Names.
